In
this paper we would like to consider whether Russian universities are part
of Civil Society or Political Society (for that matter perhaps both).
In order to be able to do this we first go deeper into the theory
of Civil Society and Political Society to have an idea of the number of
conceptions about the topic.
A historical overview will also enable us to derive main traditions
of thinking about Civil/Political Society.
Thus we will have at the end of the first part of this paper, a
number of concepts of Civil and Political Society.
In the second part of this paper we will try to develop a concept
of Russian universities.
For this we will ground ourselves on the functions they perform in
Russian society.
As this is a excercise in political philosophy, we will not search
empirically for the manifestations of their functions, but we will instead
circumscribe the main, i.e. universal functions a university performs.
Once we put together our concept of a Russian university we
will try to fit it into the concepts of Civil/Political Society; this will
consequently constitute part three of this paper.
